Chappell Roan turned the opening night of her two-show Super Graphic Spectacular in Los Angeles into a major pop crossover, welcoming Christina Aguilera for a surprise performance at the Shrine Auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Aguilera appeared roughly halfway through Roan’s set, first taking center stage for her 2002 hit “Beautiful.” The two singers then joined forces on “Coffee,” a track from Roan’s Midwest Princess.
Roan introduced Aguilera with an emotional tribute, crediting the singer with helping create more freedom for women in pop.
“I want to introduce this person [who] honestly paved the way for me and all women in pop to do whatever the f—k they want, sing and wear whatever the f—k they want…and I’m so grateful to have her,” Roan told the audience. “She’s a f—king legend.”
After the pair embraced onstage, Aguilera returned the praise.
“From the moment I heard Chappell’s voice, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with,” Aguilera said before performing “Beautiful” as Roan watched.

The surprise appearance continued with a song from Roan’s own catalog. Aguilera called “Coffee” “one of my favorite songs of hers,” setting up a duet that gave both performers the opportunity to take individual verses before joining together at the end.
The moment also included a brief, unscripted stumble. A visibly flustered Roan missed the opening line, prompting a good-natured laugh from Aguilera. Roan quickly found her place, and the singers proceeded to trade verses and harmonize during the finale.
Aguilera’s arrival was not the only notable addition to the first night’s set. Roan also performed Olivia Rodrigo’s “Expectations.” Roan and Rodrigo had released a remix of the track the previous week.
The Wednesday bill featured a substantial group of opening performers, with Lola Young, Tinashe, Amanda Lepore, Blaine Petrovia and Kyra Jeté all appearing before Roan’s headlining set.
ShowBiz Take
The Aguilera cameo gave the first Super Graphic Spectacular show a clear centerpiece, but it was the mutual admiration between the two performers that made the pairing especially significant. Roan publicly recognized Aguilera’s influence on women in pop, while Aguilera singled out Roan’s voice and chose a Midwest Princess song she personally considers a favorite.
The performance also moved beyond the standard surprise-guest format. Rather than limiting Aguilera’s appearance to one familiar hit, the set connected “Beautiful” with “Coffee,” allowing the artists to spotlight material from both of their catalogs. Roan’s brief mistake at the beginning of the duet only underscored the spontaneity of the encounter before the singers recovered and finished together.
The concerts have a charitable purpose as well. All proceeds from the two Super Graphic Spectacular shows will be donated to Roan’s Midwest Princess Project. The initiative has raised more than $800,000 to date for over 60 organizations that benefit trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.
What Happens Next?
Roan’s Los Angeles Spectacular continues with its second and final night on Thursday, Oct. 22. She will return for another headlining set, this time following performances by Caroline Polacheck, MUNA, Alisa Mae, Fantasia Royale Gaga and Sweaty Eddie.
Whether the second show will produce another surprise appearance is unconfirmed, but Aguilera’s night-one arrival has already given the two-night event a standout collaboration.
