Jalen Brunson opened Saturday Night Live Season 52 with a hosting debut that leaned into his athletic credentials, while musical guest Katseye helped welcome two new cast members through an awkward girl-group competition.
The NBA Finals 2026 MVP arrived at 30 Rockefeller Center following the Knicks’ big win at Madison Square Garden. Brunson took on several character roles during Saturday’s NBC episode, including a gifted student who upends the social order in High School Musical: The New Generation and Shark Tank judge Daymond John.
Katseye welcomes the new cast
New cast members Grace Reiter and Saidah Belo-Osagie were introduced in a parody season of The Debut: Dream Academy, with Katseye returning to crown a new girl group.
The sketch assembled an intentionally awkward lineup featuring Reiter, Belo-Osagie, Jane Wickline and Veronika Slowikowska. Katseye then appeared with the group in a mini music video, giving the newcomers a music-driven showcase during the season premiere.
Brunson’s most basketball-focused sketch came in High School Musical: The New Generation. He played an athletically dominant new student who repeatedly dunks on the story’s new Troy Bolton stand-in, played by Jeremy Culhane.
The disruption did not end on the court. Brunson’s character also stole the other student’s girlfriend, played by Slowikowska, turning the familiar school-musical setup into a one-sided rivalry.
Brunson joins a concert support group
Another sketch placed Brunson in a support group for men whose spouses had been grinded on during Usher and Chris Brown’s The R&B Tour. As the men shared their experiences, Brunson’s character revealed that he had paid heavily for a meet-and-greet that did not go as expected.
“When I spent $1,200 on that meet-and-greet, I never expected her to actually greet his meat,” Brunson said as the other support-group members comforted him.
Brunson later portrayed Daymond John in a Shark Tank parody built around “Respectacles,” a pair of glasses designed to sound an alarm whenever the wearer looks at breasts.
Culhane and Ben Marshall played the inventors, whose presentation repeatedly fell apart as they looked at Lori Greiner and triggered the product. Brunson’s John had a practical follow-up question about the technology, asking whether it “works for ass.”
The premiere also featured a Weekend Update installment that mocked Paramount+, Spider-Man, The Odyssey and Obsession.
