Jeff Daniels is heading into wedding-day chaos for The Reception, a new comedy set around a Scottish celebration that begins with one major complication: the bride and groom are missing from their own party.
Daniels, a two-time Emmy winner and five-time Golden Globe nominee, has been set to lead the feature, with Trudie Styler directing. The film is being mounted by Styler and Celine Rattray’s Maven Screen Media alongside Piers Tempest’s Tempo Productions.
Beta Cinema is introducing the project to international buyers at this week’s TIFF market, while CAA Media Finance is handling North America.
Pre-production is already underway. Filming is scheduled to begin next month in Scotland, with the production set to shoot in a castle near the famous Loch Ness, just outside Inverness. Additional high-end cast is currently being finalized.
A wedding reception without the wedding couple
The film’s premise centers on a lavish event at a grand Scottish estate that pushes ahead despite the absence of the bride and groom. According to the synopsis, Felix has left Victoria at the altar, forcing their parents, relatives, friends, staff and guests to manage the fallout while trying to preserve the appearance of a celebration.
What starts as an effort to keep the reception moving turns into a day marked by mishaps, comedy and unexpected connections. As the gathering unravels, the in-laws, guests and estate staff are drawn into their own relationship reckoning while dealing with the collapse of the wedding at the center of the day.
Styler will direct and produce The Reception. Rattray, her Maven Screen Media business partner, is producing as well, along with Tempest. The project brings together companies already active in the prestige film space: Maven’s recent features include Scarlett Johansson’s directorial debut Eleanor the Great, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, while Tempest is credited in the source material with The Wife.
Styler adds another directing project
The Reception will mark Styler’s fifth directing project. Her most recent film, Up Against It, is premiering this week at TIFF.
Her previous directing work includes The Sweatbox, a documentary commissioned by Disney that she co-directed; Freak Show, her directorial debut, which was nominated for three awards at Berlin in 2017; and Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples, which received Italy’s Globo d’Oro for best documentary in 2024.
For Daniels, The Reception adds another title to a screen career that includes films and series such as Gettysburg, The Newsroom and Dumb and Dumber. He also has the movies 2034 and Starman upcoming.
The project is entering the market with its key creative team in place, a lead actor attached and production plans already moving. With sales launching at TIFF and shooting planned for next month in Scotland, The Reception is now positioned as one of the new comedy packages looking to gather momentum with buyers.
