Movistar Plus has begun laying out its 2027 programming ambitions, unveiling a slate at the San Sebastián Film Festival that includes new work connected to JA Bayona and Fernando León de Aranoa, alongside a broader push into Spanish film.
The company introduced several projects during a presentation led by Movistar Plus CEO Alfonso Gómez Palacio and Director of Content Juan Andrés García Ropero. Among the headline announcements were two non-fiction features executive-produced by Bayona and a new comedy series from León de Aranoa, the filmmaker behind The Good Boss.
León de Aranoa’s series is titled The Castaway. He has written the screenplays and directed the project, which is produced by León, Jaume Roures and Patricia de Muns. Belén Cuesta and David Verdaguer star.
The Bayona-backed projects remain under wraps for now. Movistar Plus confirmed that both will be non-fiction features, but the company did not share additional specifics during the San Sebastián presentation.
A 1991 Barcelona Olympics Series Is Also On The Way
On the television side, Movistar Plus also confirmed a series from Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor, whose credits include The Brief Life. The project will offer a fictionalized account of the 1991 Barcelona Olympics, with the streamer saying the series will focus on preparations for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
The series is being produced in collaboration with Charlie Pisco Producciones and Kubik Films. Its cast includes David Verdaguer, Paula Malia, Silvia Abril, Andreu Buenafuente, Maria León, Alex Brendemühl, Pau Durà and Jorge Usón.
Verdaguer’s presence across the slate is notable within the announcements themselves: he is listed among the stars of León de Aranoa’s The Castaway and also appears in the ensemble for the Barcelona Olympics project.
Movistar Plus Pledges Weekly Spanish Films In 2027
Beyond individual series and feature projects, Movistar Plus used the festival platform to signal a larger commitment to Spanish filmmaking. Gómez Palacio and García Ropero said the company will expand its support of homegrown talent, with a specific plan to debut one new Spanish film every week on the Movistar Plus platform in 2027.
“The Spanish film industry is experiencing an extraordinary moment, and we believe Movistar Plus has a responsibility to contribute to its continued growth,” Ropero said. “We are looking for projects with quality, personality, and a unique perspective. We want stories that no one else dares to tell.”
The weekly-film pledge gives the slate a clear platform strategy alongside its project-by-project announcements. It also places Spanish cinema at the center of Movistar Plus’ 2027 plans, at least based on what the company chose to emphasize in San Sebastián.
Additional Projects Announced
The streamer’s presentation also included several other titles and creative teams. A Family Visit will be directed by Sandra Romero, whose credits include As Silence Passes By. 250 Meters will be directed by Daniel Monzón, associated in the announcement with Outlaws.
Movistar Plus also announced a series from the Moriartis, produced by Carles Porta. Anna Castillo, Pol López and Eduard Fernández are attached to star in that project.
Taken together, the San Sebastián announcements sketch a 2027 slate built across scripted television, Spanish films and non-fiction features. The company has now confirmed major creative names, several casts and its weekly Spanish-film rollout plan, while key details on Bayona’s two executive-produced non-fiction features remain undisclosed.
