Late yesterday afternoon, feminist icon, activist, journalist, and writer Gloria Steinem passed away at the age of 92. The news was shared to her official Instagram account in a joint post with her nonprofit, Gloria’s Foundation. “Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard,” the caption read. “Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humor.”

During her accomplished life, Steinem was a pioneer for women’s rights, acting as a cofounder of Ms. magazine, the National Women’s Political Caucus—which helps women seeking roles in appointed office—and the Women’s Media Center. Throughout the past few years, she held “Talking Circles” seminars from within her own home as a way of organizing and promoting activism, and she also finished writing her memoir An Unexpected Life, which will hit shelves on September 22.

Due to Steinem’s immense impact, the news of her passing was met by emotional messages from female leaders, artists, activists, and change-makers around the world. “You all know her many accolades and the way in which she helped shape the world for women and all people,” Duchess Meghan wrote in a post. “Generational change doesn’t happen by accident or fate—it takes leaders like Gloria Steinem who work hand in hand with so many others to build a lasting movement,” Melinda Gates noted in another.
