The FIFA World Cup may be all about the football, but we have to admit, it’s also a little bit about the star power. The tournament notably kicked off in Mexico City and Los Angeles in early June, with a series of starry musical performances featuring everyone from Shakira to Tyla to Katy Perry. And in the weeks since, the stars have filled the stadium’s VIP boxes for the exciting matches. But the most unexpected show of stardom comes courtesy of the celebrity captains. Broken into groups of “hospitality captains” and “stadium captains,” these stars are designated leaders chosen by team managers to; each hospitality captain represents a host city, while each stadium captain presents the ball for a specific match.
Paris Hilton brought out her children to deliver the ball for the recent Turkey versus USA match, and the trio was so adorable in matching custom U.S. denim jersey looks from Adidas (they love to outfit-coordinate).
USWNT star Trinity Rodman took to the field as the captain for USA versus Australia—and she debuted a sharp blonde bob while in a slinky black top and camouflage cargo pants from Adidas.
The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Lola Tung even got in on the action, going sporty in a graphic top and rolled-down Adidas soccer shorts to act as the celebrity captain for the Brazil versus Morocco match.
Others included athlete couple Patrick and Brittany Mahomes (Argentina vs. Algeria), Anna Cathcart (Canada vs. Qatar), Jaedyn Shaw (France vs. Senegal), and Alessia Cara (Canada vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina).
Meanwhile, for hospitality, the “Starting 16” include Ciara (Atlanta), Julian Edelman (Boston), Rob Lowe (L.A.), Megan Rapinoe (Seattle), and Cobie Smulders (Vancouver).
All hail the summer of sports!
